Discover how SPARC helped Malakai master developmental milestones!

Malakai began his journey at SPARC primarily using gestures and vocalizations to communicate. His mother shared with SPARC staff that he used to know more words, but his language skills had declined over time. Sometimes this could make Malakai feel frustrated when he couldn’t effectively express his needs and wants to his family.
During his initial evaluation, Malakai’s mother mentioned he always wanted to keep his hands clean and had strong reactions to certain textures like sand and grass. Social situations often caused anxiety, leading to him biting himself and clenching his fists. During that first home visit, even the therapist entering the home was overwhelming for Malakai. His difficulties with emotional regulation meant he would often hide from his family when upset, avoid playing with peers, and become distressed by certain triggers.
Fast forward to today, a little over a year since Malakai started at SPARC. Malakai now communicates using one- or two-word phrases to ask for help, join in classroom activities, and advocate for himself!
Malakai’s social development has also been remarkable! During his most recent IFSP meeting, where two new adults were present, Malakai showed no signs of distress. In fact, he was excited to show off his toys! Malakai now greets adults with a joyful shriek or a warm smile. He has also fostered peer relationships, offering comfort to classmates when they are upset, sharing toys, taking turns, and dancing with his friends during circle time.
We are so proud of you, Malakai!
